If you’re in the market for a better smile, you’ve probably priced out Invisalign. Prices for Invisalign usually come in ranges, which makes sense, since prices for services tend to vary by what region of the country you live. But what if you want a more specific estimate? For example, what are Invisalign costs for Southern Virginia, an area that we serve?
Does the Coast Matter for Invisalign Cost Estimates?
You can’t get around it: Prices on the two coasts tend to be higher than they are in the middle of the country. This means that Invisalign costs in Virginia, and especially Southern Virginia, will be a little higher than the national average of $3500 (for typical cases).
One way to get a handle on costs for things like Invisalign is to look at the cost of living for your area. There are several organizations that index prices for things like homes, transportation, and utilities, comparing them to national averages. Since these prices tend to drive both salaries and prices for good and services, knowing how much more these housing and transportation costs on average will give you an idea of how much other things cost.
To give you a feel of how prices in Virginia stack up:
|For...||% of national average|
|Housing||110 to 138% (depending on county and urban vs. rural)|
Overall, Southern Virginia has a cost of living of 107%-- in other words, it costs 7% more to live in Virginia compared to living someplace that’s right at the national average.
That said, it’s mostly housing costs that are driving this figure. If you look at healthcare specifically, Virginia is right at, or even a little below, the national average.
This means that orthodontic services, if priced fairly, should be right around the national average for Virginia residents.
So Just How Much Does Invisalign Cost in Virginia?
We often give a range from $4000 to $8000 for Invisalign. Sometimes, for minor cases, the cost can be lower (as low as $3500 or even $3500). More complex cases are, of course, higher.
Don’t forget that, when it comes to covering the cost of Invisalign, insurance coverage can matter. In Virginia, most major providers of dental insurance will partially cover the cost of Invisalign, providing anywhere from 25% to 50% of the total cost. Just be aware that there are often lifetime limits, which can be as low as $1000 or as high as $3500.

At the end of the day, it is important to consult with an orthodontist to get a specific figure for your particular case. With an examination, x-rays, and 3-D modeling, an orthodontist should be able to determine how many trays you need, as well as what other procedures might be necessary, all of which can affect the cost.
Compare Apples to Apples When it Comes to Aligners
Be aware that, when orthodontists and dentists give price estimates online, they might not be pricing Invisalign itself, but one of its alternatives. This lets them quote lower prices, but you are not getting the same product or service. So be sure you are comparing apples to apples when doing your price shopping.
Also, many websites will provide prices not based on the average, but based on the “best case” scenario. Or, they might provide prices for states where these services are much less expensive--which doesn’t help you determine Invisalign costs in Southern Virginia, or wherever you live. Again, beware low-ball estimates.
